I know that’s not quite true as there are people still alive that lived through WW2 however most of the footage and pictures of that period are black and white which makes it feel “old”. However, in the main I’ve stayed away from anything that could be seen to glamorize or trivialize events that people are still struggling to deal with today.<p></p><p>When Osprey released Black Ops I was drawn into the potential of gaming fictional spy and action movies and video games, after all the cover does appear to feature Solid Snake! This post won’t be a review of Black Ops as that’s been covered by other, more competent bloggers than me out there, but this will be an introduction to the fictional setting for my foray in<br />to very near future/modern gaming!</p><p>So let me introduce the fictional African state of Zaka Neba, which roughly translates to Home of the People in the local language of Mooré (a real language spoken by the Mossi peoples of Western Africa).</p><p>This is a post-colonial western African nation sandwiched somewhere between Mali to the north, Nigeria to the east and Senegal to the west. Through negotiation and peaceful revolution, it emerged from its colonial past to become a democracy competing favourably with its neighbours in the wider African geopolitical community. Its people are ethnically and religiously diverse and currently enjoying a growing economy and improved quality of life equivalent to many prosperous African nations (although this is mainly in the cities). Rurally things still echo both the colonial period of rich european landowners as well as isolated tribal communities following traditional cultural practices.</p><p>However things recently got weird with the accidental discovery of a naturally occurring mineral compound that has the unusual property of being 20 times more effective at capturing carbon than any known industrial process. The team that discovered this were a joint initiative by the Zaka Neba government research institute and 3 leading western universities, and as you can expect the news of this discovery made its way to several western governments who instantly prioritised the exclusive acquisition of this compound over their competitors.</p><p>What followed was aggressive negotiations by the west with the Zaka Neba government over who would have exclusive access to this potentially immeasurably valuable resource, however behind the scenes this would be decided through the age-old solution of take what you can by force!</p><p>The key players in this imaginary drama are:</p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>The Zaka Neba Ministry of Development – government officials and hired mercenary specialist “operators”</li><li>US Marines and Delta Force – ostensibly a peacekeeping</li><li>force, but may have CIA involvement</li><li>Western Operators – unknown Spec Ops, possibly of various nations or private interests</li><li>The Rural Peace Initiative – Local militia operating as police in rural areas</li><li>Agents – Unknown who they represent, pose as civilians.</li></ul><p></p>Stephen Haranhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07052611372084200629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7153153038135889907.post-9009043782460888772023-02-08T07:32:00.000+13:002023-02-08T07:32:50.291+13:00A Roman InvasionAt least that's what it feels like on my painting table. This is a Warlord Games resin Stug G and that's right, it's wrong. I've had this for year's and hated the original paint job, it didn't match any of my later models and just looked shoddy. So in a fit of positivity I pulled it to bits (carefully), stripped it and started again. It was at the this point that I remembered that the tracks were curved and no amount of hot water baths and gentle bending would restraighten them.<div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

That's right, I'm a yorkshireman which means short arms and deep pockets so whenever I can avoid spending cash I will. And with GW's terrifying prices down here in NZ its pretty rare that I would spend any of my hard earned on their products. <div>I'm quite enjoying painting my 40k Death Guard at the moment, it makes a refreshing change from the hordes of Saxons and Roman's I've been doing recently. Scott had kindly organized an intro game for Bryan, Roly and I, so one stormy night Bryan drove us both up the long, dark and dangerous newly opened highway to Chez Bowman, meeting Mijnheer Roly there. <div><br><div>What followed was a hilarious, embarrassing, tense, comedic and downright fabulous evening of gaming, with some of dark age Britain's most disreputable Kingdoms battling it out for possession of a tiny little bridge in the middle of nowhere. Where legendary decisions were made ("march across the bridge in column", "but they'll charge us sir!") and betrayals were rife ("how many turns have your viking mercenaries sat on that hill now Bryan?", "errr, they're having tea").</div><div><br></div><div>I'll let the pictures do the talking</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>Initial deployment, you can see the bridge in question, my Saxons bottom right cheerfully planning to run full speed to claim it with Bryan's Vikings holding my left flank on the hill. Roly was facing him and had plenty of time to ford the river to get in to position, whilst Scott was going to swing down our right flank while also pushing across the aforementioned bridge. </div></div><div>Hmm what happened!</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have bought a couple of boxes of French line infantry and cavalry but as I've struggled to paint up these British infantry I'm not sure I'll be able to muster the courage to paint anymore. <div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div></div><div> It'll probably end up as a scenario objective or something for a skirmish game at some point. <br></div>Stephen Haranhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07052611372084200629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7153153038135889907.post-13443387190169130832021-12-14T13:09:00.000+13:002021-12-14T13:09:49.425+13:00Introduction to BattlegroupSo in these wonderful days of lockdowns, covid restrictions, political shenanigans and general all round rubbishiness its been quite hard to find either the time, freedom or enthusiasm to get any kind of gaming done. Admittedly here in NZ we had a little more freedom than the rest of the universe during the initial stages of the pandemic (woohoo team NZ) however with the arrival of Delta that has come crashing down. Hope looms on the horizon as our population marches grumpily towards the magic vaccination percentage target and boosters arrive into the country on magic wings of steel (sounds like there's a song lyric in there somewhere).<div><br></div><div>So what has any of this for to do with Battlegroup I hear no one ask. Well my gaming circle finally managed to create space in our respective diaries to carve out an afternoons Sunday gaming at Chez Bowman (go visit scottswargaming.blogspot.com or https://www.facebook.com/Kapiti-Hobbies-120527141849458/for more info).</div><div><br></div><div>As a few of us were new comers to Battlegroup we decided to run through an intro game with the theme of "err, somewhere in Western Europe some Tommies bump into some Jerrys and hijinks ensue". We didn't bother calculating points and just grabbed whatever models were to hand, then picked an arbitrary 20 BR rating for both forces.</div><div><br></div><div>The mission was some kind of meeting engagement with a scouting phase involving a SD.KFZ 222 versus a Humber Scout Car and 2 Universal Carriers. Whilst Jerry was outnumbered the Tommies couldn't get through the armor of the 222 whilst their autocannon made short work of one of the carriers. The Tommies did however make to claim 3 objectives in the initial scouting phase which put Jerry's morale under pressure early on with 3 chits getting drawn to the Tommies one. </div><div><br></div><div>Then the game really began as the armour trundle onto the board slowly followed by the infantry. It took some getting used to the spot, shoot, kill tests and how to calculate the respective dice rolls but we got the hang of it in the end. </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So in the interewsts of being an active participant in this little hobby of ours I signed up to roll dice for a weekend (with the agreement of my wife obviously!).<div><br><div>However this then begs the question 'What force to play?' I've always played Saga with Anglo Saxons, there something about the plucky Fyrd kicking some Viking butt that has always appealed to me however I thought I'd be a little silly and play Jomsvikings. Why Jomsvikings, well because they're completely nuts, have a weird battle board, can only have hearthguard and warriors and cannot take any allies or mercenaries. So it should prove challenging.</div><div><br></div><div>Oh did I forget to say that I'd only painted 4 of them at this point? Tournaments are always good motivation for getting something finished aren't they!</div><div><br></div><div>I needed 7 pts of Joms, we would only be playing with 6 pts with the 7th being an option should we choose to mess with our lists a little. This didn't really help me as I couldn't have anything but Jomsvikings so it would just have to be a bucket of hearthguard and warriors. So here we have my 6 pts of Jomsvikings (the 7th being some beserkers I heard kicking about thai never got used).</div><div><br></div><div>6x Hearthguard</div><div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;
